Wing Ding 10 and 11

Sunday July 8th
I had to post this picture of Billie the Ninja rider posing with the rest of the girls. We left Dillon Montana and rolled into Idaho with a stop at Spencer for a little look into the Opal mining. We had lunch at Flags West and then headed for Utah.

Steve Seligman had an flat tire on his trailer and it only took us 12 minutes to get it changed.

We rolled into Salt Lake City and got checked into the hotel. Steve, Mike and I went looking for a Wal-Mart to purchase a tire to replace the flat Steve had. Mike had me lead our little group and I took them on a wild goose chase for the Wal-Mart with the tire. We went to two Wal-Marts and a Big K Mart without success.

When we returned to the hotel, there were police cars and fire department vehicles there. It turns out that our hotel was in the middle of “crack” alley. We packed our stuff and went on down to Springville, Utah which is about 50 miles south of Salt Lake City.

We only saw a porcupine along the highway today. Not much to see as far as wild life but there was plenty of excitement at that hotel. SWAT was there on a hostage/suicide incident and a drug bust which led us to change hotels.

We loaded up the bikes, got a refund and rode down to Springville, Utah and stayed at a Days Inn. It took about 50 miles off of our trip on into Las Vegas.

I did get some pictures in Spencer.

Monday July 9th

We were up and at Cracker Barrel for breakfast at 6 AM and on the road just after 7. It was cool and nice starting out and we made good time. It didn’t take long for the heat to start building. By 11 AM it was already in the high 90’s and we busted the 100 degree marker by 11:30 when we stopped in St George for lunch. We went through several wildfires along the freeway and the smoke looked like smog or haze for most of the ride in Utah.

After lunch, we rolled into Arizona for about 30 miles and the temp was 113. We hit a cold front and it dropped to 108 for a little while but then the heat wave regained momentum and it hit 112 again. We had to make to stops after hitting Nevada due to the heat. We had only about 75 miles but the heat was so intense that we didn’t want to push anyone. Needless to say we drank a lot of water and Gatorade.

Samstown is a nice place. We got in and Billie and I went to the pool for a refreshing dip before rejoining the group on the Casino floor. We watched some of them gamble for a little while and then Steve and Linda Seligman joined Billie and I for dinner at the Mexican Restaurant before retiring for the evening. I was in bed by 9 and slept like a baby.
